A DEVIZES steelworker who punched a car window in with his fist is seeking help for his drink problem, Kennet magistrates heard on Tuesday.
The court was told that Craig Grant, 20, of Waiblingen Way, Devizes, drinks at least eight cans of beer a day and is concerned that his habit is leading him to break the law.
Marion Langford, prosecuting, said that a witness saw Grant punch the window of a green Peugeot 106, parked in Station Road, Devizes, four or five times before succeeding in smashing it.
The witness followed Grant towards a block of flats but retreated after being approached by another man wielding a large hammer. But he managed to point Grant out to police when they arrived. Grant initially denied causing criminal damage but changed his position when faced with forensic evidence implicating him.
The court heard that Grant was in breach of a conditional discharge handed down for a burglary at an empty house at Drews Pond last year.
Alex Daymond, defending, said: "Both offences were committed in drink." Magistrates agreed to adjourn the case for a pre-sentence report.
