Your obituary (Gazette, May 12) on Sir Charles Morrison failed to mention the singular honour bestowed by Devizes Town Council to mark his retirement from public life and acknowledge his services both to local government in Wiltshire and as the MP for the Devizes Constituency for over 20 years.
On September 18, 1992 a colourful yet solemn civic ceremony was held in the Town Hall, chaired by the Town Mayor (the late) Coun Dick Breach to admit Sir Charles to the Roll of Honorary Freemen of Devizes.
In that capacity, Sir Charles continued to attend civic occasions for several years before his illness prevented him; and I believe the very last visit he was able to pay to Devizes was to attend the Remembrance Day service in 2003.
