The Trustees of Kennet Valley Arts Trust raised the profile of the Riverbank project to develop an arts facility by the visit of The Duchess of Northumberland last weekend.
She enthralled an audience of some 130 people with her enthusiastic presentation that brought the fantastic Alnwick Garden project to life.
She talked about the beautiful Grand Cascade, The Poison Garden, The Labyrinth and the magnificent Treehouse. The vision for Alnwick is a garden for the whole community with fantastic water features, theatre, dance and exhibitions to involve the whole community a project that will regenerate the North East and result in one of the most prestigious garden attractions in Europe, with already over 500,000 visitors a year.
Duchess Jane's enthusiasm was infectious. She and Ian August, the garden director, talked about the history of the garden and the exciting plans for the future. The presentation was given to support the Riverbank project and followed a lunch in the beautiful garden and marquee generously provided by Oliver and Barbara Clauson in Ogbourne St George.
The event was a great success and raised well over £2,000 for Riverbank. We are very grateful to the Duchess for her support, to Oliver and Barbara and to the many volunteers who gave so freely of their time to run a busy bar and provide a delicious lunch. Even the somewhat indifferent weather could not dampen this event!
With grateful thanks to everyone who contributed to its success.
