The A330 Warminster bypass at Cley Hill roundabout was blocked by the incident 30535A MILK tanker crashed near Warminster, forcing the 19,000 litres of milk to be transferred to another lorry.
The tanker overturned on the A350 Warminster bypass at Cley Hill roundabout.
There were fears that the milk could leak out and pour into the water supply, contaminating it, but police and rescue crews prevented this.
Acting Sgt Jamie Darvill said: "It happened around 1.30pm on Friday.
"We think the lorry came round the corner and the milk shifted from one side to another. This slewed it into the ditch. The whole tanker and the truck disappeared off the road.
"Pc Phil Taylor arrived quickly on the scene and did an excellent job making sure everything got sorted out safely. There was no leakage into the water, which could have made a nasty mess."
The bypass was blocked for more than an hour while the milk was transferred and a recovery truck hauled out the lorry.
