FIRSTLY, I am not the Liberal Democrat councillor, name and address supplied, who has written a long letter to the paper.

I cannot see why the paper should print such a letter without giving the name of the correspondent. The councillor is as critical as were some of the opposing political voices, but their words were reported by your paper, and the letter from Helen Timbrell comments on them.

I am a Liberal Democrat town councillor from Bradford on Avon. You simply put "Councillor, " not giving a clue as to whether the councillor is a county, district or town councillor. Perhaps the critical letter-writing councillor will give his name, so that councillors of all parties can discuss his views ?

AS A former resident of west Wilts, and with strong family connections in the area. I have been totally surprised by the antics of the Liberal and Labour councillors.

I am a conservative member in Swindon, however I believe that the people of west Wilts will be poorly served by their elected council, if this episode is a benchmark of their conduct.

I would, for all those younger members, use a Star Wars -analogy to put into laymens terms what has actually happened.

"The Republic had brought peace, prosperity and stability to the Galaxy but the Dark Emperor, the embodiment of evil, sought to overturn it and rule the Galaxy himself.

"To achieve his objective he seduced Anakin Skywalker, a young Jedi Knight being groomed for his role in defending the Republic, with the prospect of power and wealth, trying to turn him to the Dark side of the force which pervaded the Galaxy.

"Skywalker succumbed and became Darth Vader, the Emperor's Enforcer. The Republic crumbled in the face of their unprincipled onslaught and an evil empire was born."

I make or imply no actual reference to anyone in respect of any characters played. It is, as they say, totally coincidental.

NOW that the General Election is over I see that the Lib Dems are starting their usual chorus that the electoral system is unfair. This is in spite of their best haul of seats since 1929.

The sheer beauty of the British voting system is that it allows us, the voters, to act swiftly and decisively. In 1997 and 2001 we were determined to give Labour landslide victories and we did! In 2005 we were determined to rein in Prime Minister Blair and we have!

The real evil of PR is that it destroys that vital link between constituency MP and voter. At the moment what we see on the doorstep in terms of candidates is what we vote for. Long may it continue.
