JUST days after the death of 17-year-old Milly Newton-Clare, Wiltshire's roads have claimed a second teenage life.

A 16-year-old girl was walking along a main road near Malmesbury when she was struck by a van in the early hours yesterday morning.

Malmesbury's deputy mayor John Poole said the death had shattered the community.

"It's a tragedy for Malmesbury," he said.

"I would like to send my deepest sympathy to her family.

"This a close community, and neighbours will be rallying around to help.

"This is the kind of town where people help each other out."

The accident happened as the girl walked along the A429 near the junction with Grange Lane between Malmesbury and Corston.

She was hit by a red Ford Transit van travelling towards Malmesbury at 4.30am.

Police had not released her name as the Evening Advertiser went to press, but said she was from Malmesbury.

A police spokesman said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have seen someone walking from Malmesbury to Corston from 3am or who drove along the A429 between Malmesbury and Corston at or around 4.30am."
