We now learn that ID cards are going to cost £100 each, which will have to be paid for, one way or another, by us taxpayers.

As an engineer working in the security industry I am very sceptical whether the technology will even work.

ID cards are about as good an idea as the poll tax or the Millennium Dome.

The police should not be expected to waste their time checking the documents of law-abiding citizens going about their lawful business.

And what will they solve?

Spain already has ID cards and that didn't stop the Madrid train bombing that was the worst terrorist atrocity ever carried out in Europe.
