A SWINDON veterans' group could be closer to solving a mystery after an appeal in the Evening Advertiser.
The town's branch of the British Korean Veterans' Association is trying to track down the family of Lieutenant Robert Arbuthnot, who is believed to be the only soldier from Swindon who died in the 1950-1953 Korean War.
In Thursday's Adver Bert Davey, the group's secretary, appealed for information.
He said: "I've had several callers who have each given a little bit of information.
"There was one gentleman who phoned and said he could recall him from his schooldays at Haileybury in Hertfordshire.
"And I had a caller whom I believe keeps in contact with his brother.
"He will pass on my message, and hopefully we will be in contact."
Last week the British Korean Veterans' Association HQ confirmed that Lieut Arburthnot, who served with the Royal Warwickshire regiment, was killed in action on Christmas Day 1953.
Although fighting officially ended in July of that year, trouble often flared as troops from the United Nations tried to keep the peace.
