Swindon Spitfires' under 14s travelled to the Fry Club at Keynsham for a six-a-side tournament on Saturday and came within a whisker of winning it.

Played on a league basis, Spitfires opened their account with a 1-1 draw against hosts Fry Club thanks to Kelly Peck's goal from a corner on the right.

Next up were Wicklea Girls who were despatched 5-0 with goals from Emma Skinner (2), Louise Hoffa, Lauren Wakeling and one own goal.

With other results going their way it meant a winner-takes-all showdown with Downend Flyers in the final game.

A Spitfires win would see them champions, a draw would mean second place.

Spitfires took control of the game, but couldn't find the breakthrough required. Lauren Wakeling saw their best chance come back off the cross bar just before the interval.

Then just as it looked as though it would end a draw Downend nicked a goal a couple of minutes from time, meaning Spitfires finished a disappointing third.

Squad: Chelsea Cleary, Kim Harding, Louise Hoffa, Kelly Peck, Grace Purnell, Emma Skinner, Lauren Wakeling.
