A SCHEME to get more musical instruments into Swindon schools has been launched with a fanfare.

Note for Note is run by Lloyds TSB across the country and has now been kicked off in Swindon.

At a gala night last week hosted by Churchfields School youngsters from Churchfields, Hreod Parkway, St Joseph's and Lawn infants and junior schools took to the stage with performances including choir singing, orchestral music and some rock bands.

Newly-elected South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove also attended.

Lloyds TSB's local director Sara Lilly, from the Old Town branch, said: "We are encouraging all the schools in the Swindon area to sign up for Note for Note and we hope that evening's entertainment proved just how inspirational and enjoyable school music can be."

Russell Langdown, the acting director of performing and visual arts at Churchfields, said: "The scheme is particularly positive as it allows links to be created and maintained with parents and other community partners. We are delighted to provide the opportunity for Swindon schools to join together in this way."

The scheme works by Lloyds' customers rounding down the amount in their current account once a month.

If there is £156.23 in the account 23p will be donated, and fixed-sum monthly donations and one-off payments are also accepted.

The bank has teamed up with Yamaha to get discounts on instruments, including keyboards, drumkits and brass, and there is also a link up with The Prince's Trust which will be holding a series of six-day courses to help youngsters play in a band and then perform a concert.
