SOCIALLY-minded businessmen and women are required to give youngsters an insight into the working world.

The Commonweal School in Old Town is launching an environment day on July 13, to educate pupils about waste and recycling.

Groups of youngsters will work on presentations concerning different aspects of the environment looking at problems and possible solutions.

It is hoped that people from businesses who give up the day to come and see the children will be able to share analytical and problem-solving skills picked up through their work.

Commonweal's enterprise adviser Sue Hackney said: "Young people are the keys to our future and given the opportunity can present new solutions to some of the challenges facing us today.

"The day will tap into the latent entrepreneurial skills of the year 10 pupils."

The school's community arts development officer Josie Williams said: "We have to bring work-related learning into the classroom environment.

"The idea is that when young people leave school they are clued up on how industry works.

"We'd love business people to help so the students can approach it in the way businesses would approach a problem."

As well as prominent figures from Swindon's business community there will be artists on hand to help the children get the message across.

The day a pilot scheme hoped to be repeated in the future will see all of year 10 (14 and 15-year-olds) take part.

The school says that as well as giving an insight into the world of business, it will form part of the citizenship curriculum.
