Organisers of the Wootton Bassett Music and Arts Festival have made a fine catch with the news that England cricketer Jack Russell will be appearing as their star guest.

The former Gloucestershire and England wicket-keeper, well-known in the cricketing world for his moustache and floppy hat, will be the guest of honour at a special VIP event on the eve of the newly revived festival.

Mr Russell, who now combines cricket commentating with his work as an artist, will hold a question and answer session as well as bringing along some of his own paintings.

Town councillor Kerrie Dixon, co-organiser of the festival, said: "We are very pleased that a big name like Jack Russell has agreed to come and support our festival, although the evening itself will be invite only.

"The way to get an invite will be to help sponsor the festival. That'll allow you to come and meet Jack Russell and it'll also get your name on the programme, fliers and website."

The opening night of the festival will be held at the Memorial Hall on June 22 and will be the first time the event has taken place for 22 years.

Fellow organiser Brian Taylor said: "This is going to be the first ever competitive arts festival we've had in Wootton Bassett. It will help raise the standard and give students of all ages the chance to perform in public."

The singing competition is split into categories of show tunes and pop, with the instrumental competition divided into solo and solo with backing tracks. The entry fee is £2.50.

The theme for the arts competition is 'local views of Wootton Bassett and district' and entries can be in any medium. Entry costs £1 and artwork must be no larger than A3.

Entry forms are available from Brian Taylor Music, SPS Stationery, Framing & Stamping Corner, Bob the Baker, the library and town council offices. The deadline for entries is June 30.
