GAZETTE & HERALD: A STONE cairn has been erected in the wild flower meadow in Castlefields Park, Calne to mark the completion of the first phase of improvements in the neighbourhood.

Wild flowers have been planted in the meadow next to the river and paths and seating have been improved as part of the project which is a joint venture between Castlefields Canal and River Park Association (CARP), the Government and Calne Nature Conservation Volunteers.

The cairn was built by a local builder and incorporates an information panel designed by Pam Marshall-Ball, a student from Wiltshire College Lackham.

Her design was judged to be the best submitted by students on the HND countryside management course.

CARP chairman Denis Robinson said: "The co-operation of all concerned has proved very worthwhile and the improvements here will be of benefit to local people and visitors.

"It is hoped that this model of involving various organisations and local groups will be utilised for future projects in the Castlefields area."

Work on a pocket park is due to start later this year. The scheme, which will incorporate a disused part of the garden of Marden House, will provide much needed recreational space.

It is hoped that the park's location and visibility from the A4 will boost tourism and passing trade to the town.

The local community has designed ceramic mosaic artwork for seating areas and school children have designed a living willow sculpture.

Other work carried out in the park includes new entrance gates, drainage, hedge and shrub planting.

A nature study walk and fitness trail are planned.

CARP's aim is to promote improvements to Castlefields Park and to create a high quality and vibrant area for the benefit of residents and visitors.
