Picture Ref: 77702-150SURE Start Month kicked off in Swindon with fire safety advice for young families.

The national Sure Start Month celebrates the education, childcare, health and support services offered by the centres.

And here the month was launched at the Sure Start Centre in Penhill by the crew from Stratton Fire Station. Sub officer Bryan Morris, from Stratton red watch, said they wanted to make sure all young families have smoke alarms.

"The ultimate aim is to have smoke alarms in all houses but we have to break it down," he said. "We joined up with Sure Start to get all the homes linked up with them to have smoke detectors because they target young families."

The fire officers took leaflets along to the centre and talked to parents about fire safety.

In the future when workers from Sure Start visit homes without smoke detectors they will be able to pass on the details to the fire station and officers will then install them for free.

Anyone who wants more information about fire safety or smoke alarms can ring the community safety hotline on 01380 731119. Events will by held at the Sure Start centre in Penhill, including a fun day from 11am to 2pm on June 24.
