HAVING recently returned from a visit to North Yorkshire I was pleasantly surprised to see in Thirsk and Yarm that their disc controlled parking continues successfully.
Both small towns have heavily used on-street parking in the market squares and wide high streets. This is used both by locals and the many tourists the towns attract.
Talking to the locals and traders it seems that this self-policing system encourages short stays with resulting turnover in users. Additionally, I was repeatedly told that all visitors, including foreigners, understand the system and value its simplicity.
Maybe now is the time for Devizes to revert?
