THE arrival of summer last Friday with its high temperature and south westerly breeze co-incided as it always does with the awakening from winter slumbers of the 'must light a bonfire and blow the environment and neighbours brigade.
With the town's superb new waste recycling facility available on a seven day a week basis and Kennet's dedicated bin service for garden rubbish, it is surely time to make this most unpleasant activity illegal.
If my car made just a 20th of the pollution that a garden fire creates, I would I am sure be arrested and chained up for life.
I believe that bonfires are now just an anachronism and must be halted on the basis of air pollution and nuisance they cause. It is high time for our local politicians of all colours to grasp this particular nettle and have bonfires consigned to the past.
