I AM utterly devastated to learn that despite thousands of objections building on the Quakers Walk in Devizes is to be allowed.
I think this decision is as we all expected pessimistically, despite our protests.
A school and 230 houses! A school is needed to accommodate children from the new development, if the houses are not built then a school is not needed in that area. What are the plans for St Peter's School?
It will be demolished and the site sold for more houses no doubt. Where will all these people work? Not in Devizes. So what will they do? Jump in their cars and drive to Swindon, Chippenham or Bath.
Two cars per household, plus teenage children, visitors, trade vans, a minimum of 460 cars spewing on the London Road, which is already a nightmare. And then we must allow for all the vehicles from the other developments planned alongside the London Road, say another 2,000 cars.
Dare I say why many of us realised why all our heartfelt protestations were useless?
We knew we were up against a powerful landowner who could afford to manipulate the sale. A huge amount of money has been invested in this project, a lengthy public consultation, an expensive exhibition of options and a very persuasive planning brief.
No consideration has been given to the residents of Parkfields and Roundway Park. The bungalows in Roundway Park will be over shadowed by houses, and for how long it takes, the residents will be living with the light and sound of a building plot, noise, dust or mud on the doorstep.
So much for human rights. I hope the men in their smart large foreign cars, dressed in their bespoke tailored suits can sleep at night.
