FOURTEEN people in north and west Wiltshire have been killed or seriously injured in road accidents involving drink drivers over the past three years.
Police officers are to take part in a high visibility campaign to try and cut the number of accidents involving excess alcohol or drugs as part of a Europe-wide initiative.
The European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL) is carrying out a campaign next week to raise awareness of the problem.
Officers in north and west Wiltshire will be carrying out spot checks throughout the area and forwarding the data to TISPOL for analysis.
Pc Barney Appleton, traffic management officer with Wiltshire Police, said: "It provides an opportunity to show the resolve of forces right across Europe in tackling this issue and to raise perception that the chances of being caught when driving under the influence of either alcohol and/or drugs are high.
"Most motorists comply with the drink drive law, but some are putting not only their own lives at risk but also those of other people."
In the UK statistics show one in seven road deaths still involve drivers with illegal levels of alcohol.
