MORE than 1,600 youngsters put on a feast of entertaining football at Trowbridge Town Youth's annual six-a-side tournament at the weekend.

The tournament got off to a great start on Friday evening, with around 50 youngsters from the Trowbridge Town Youth Kids Club taking part in an inter-club tournament.

All the players were in high spirits as every player made the most of a glorious evening, each collecting a medal as a memento of taking part in the tournament curtain raiser.

The under 12s and 14s girls also took part in two competitions. Bradford on Avon took the honours in the under 12s round-robin event and Swindon Town ran out winners in the under 14s knock-out with some strong football.

The under sevens started the Saturday competitions playing out a superb soccer festival.

With group selection based on ability, play was extremely competitive. After some enthralling matches, Trowbridge Town Youth came out as highest achievers in two groups, with Ferndale Rodbourne and Pewsey Vale securing the honours in the other groups.

In a very close under nines final Bristol Rovers Supporters' Club emerged victorious over FC Chippenham.

A great final capped a highly competitive under 11s competition. After an impressive display in the group stages, Penhill Knights emerged 3-0 winners in the final.

The under 13s brought the first full day of competition to a close.

Trowbridge Town Youth played some outstanding football to win this highly competitive age group. In a fiercely fought final, FC Chippenham took the home side to a penalty shoot-out where Tom Bartlett made a great save to secure the victory 4-3.

On Sunday the under eights took part in an exhilarating soccer festival. Trowbridge Town Youth emerged as the highest achievers in two groups with Trowbridge Wanderers and Warminster Highbury taking the honours in the other groups.

The under 10s played out a keenly contested tournament, with Shrewton scoring the only goal in the final against Frome Town Youth.

Bristol Rovers Supporters' Club emerged as winners in the under 12s age group with a 2-0 win against Upper Clatford Boys in the final.

The under 14s rounded off the tournament in style. The standard of football was maintained all the way through to the final. In a tightly contested final Trowbridge Town Youth pipped Frome Collegians by a single goal.

Trowbridge Town Youth chairman Andy Mackinder said: "It was a great tournament and I was astounded at how many players and supporters stopped to pass on their thanks for a great weekend.

"The tournament was a great advert for youth football. We are extremely grateful to those who helped us make this event a success, in particular the referees and those volunteers who always work so hard to make it all possible. They were certainly rewarded with good weather and some outstanding football."
