A clash between young and old footballers in Calne raised more than £1,000 for the Help the Heroes soldiers’ charity on Sunday.

Bremhill View Social Club put five goals past Vanguard Sports over-50s without reply.

Martin Belcher, organiser and manager of the social club, said: “It was worth all the work of organising it when I saw all the old boys having a laugh – their team had a combined age of 267. They played really well.”

More than 200 people watched the match, and £1,220 was raised through donations, a barbecue and disco. “There were far more people than we thought and we raised a good bit,” said Mr Belcher.

“One of my players is at RAF Lyneham so he is going to arrange for someone to come to one of our games so we can present the cheque.”

The clash was a repeat of a game played several years ago, when more than £3,000 was raised towards surgery to remove a birthmark from six-year-old Ellie Brown’s face.

Mr Belcher is hoping to organise another charity match in the next couple of months.

This time he wants to raise money for a rehabilitation centre where his cousin Daniel Winter has been recovering after being hit by a car.

Mr Belcher said: “Hopefully we will organise another game some time soon, when we might take on the old Enterprise Roofing side.

“If we do we will raise money for the Salisbury Rehabilitation Centre where my cousin has been looked after.

“They have been really good to him and it is a fantastic centre so it would be great to do something to help them. I would like to thank the football club for letting us use the pitch and the club on the day.”
