Corsham’s first town market in a decade was held on Tuesday, to the delight of town councillors who spent months planning it.

Councillor and resident Nick Keyworth hopes the market will grow steadily.

But it is just the beginning, with the town council introducing a farmers’ market on September 19 and the occasional specialist event, including an Italian market, on October 30.

Coun Keyworth said: “ A group of councillors have been working behind the scenes for several months researching other markets and seeing how they work.

“I am really pleased that the market is finally coming back to the town, as it was always a market town and I think this is what it needs.”

He said that now was a great time to revive the market with people looking to buy more local produce and save money.

Daniel Rich, owner of Brown’s Hardware, said that although stallholders could take trade from the shops, he thought extra footfall would bring in more regular customers.

He said: “There is a chance it may affect businesses, but I think it is more likely to be a good thing, bringing more people back to the town and if that means just one new customer a week out of 100 visitors, then it will be good.”
