I have read the recent articles and letters regarding the proposed Tesco store in Marlborough with interest but with growing confusion.
Campaigners for Tesco state they cannot buy reasonably priced clothes, sheets, etc. in the town as it is so need a Tesco store.
Tesco state that they would open a small ‘food only’ convenience store in the Business Park, needing a site smaller than the Woolies or M&S shops. So the campaigners will still have nowhere to buy the clothes & sheets. Marlborough does have reasonably priced food in the greengrocers, butchers, twice weekly market and Waitrose (consistently matching Sainsburys’ prices) and a new clothes shop has opened in the M&S site, so what will the new store do for Marlborough?
Cheap food at what cost?
Is the reason Tesco did not want the High Street sites because, as I have heard, they allegedly own One Stop already?
Marlborough should strive to provide an interesting selection of unusual and independent shops on its famous wide High Street, something different to other towns to encourage the shoppers and maybe the ‘get the first hour money back’ parking scheme that Devizes and Hungerford shops promote would help – I’m not sure Tesco will.
