Two teenagers arrested on suspicion of firing a BB gun in Calne on Monday have denied any wrongdoing.
Police were told that a 19-year-old and a 16-year-old fired at two men in Dixon Way at around 4pm on Sunday, but the teenagers said they had been asked to demonstrate the gun’s capabilities.
PC Hans Monahan said: “A 999 call was made by a resident, who was clearing his house out with a friend when two youths cycled by and produced a BB gun and fired it.
“It was reported that they fired at the property and the resident’s friend then made off.”
The victims were able to identify the youngsters, and a search by officers resulted in a BB gun and plastic pellets being seized and the boys arrested around 7pm on Monday.
The youths were interviewed at Melksham Police Station and released on bail. They denied firing at the complainant.
Further inquiries will now be carried out and the teenagers are due to return on September 29 for possible charge.
Officers are using this incident as a warning to others that they will not tolerate the use of fire arms, whether imitation or real.
PC Monahan said: “It is not wise to have anything that looks like a gun, because people can get unnecessarily worried when they do not know what is being fired at them.
“Though BB guns can be bought easily and legally, they do pose a threat to the safety of others. We cannot have people being fired at with imitation firearms.”
“If police receive calls from concerned people reporting sightings of a BB gun, we will treat the call as an emergency and will respond in the same way as any other firearm incident."
