Tributes have poured in from all over Chippenham for popular father and rock band drummer Mark Guppy, who died suddenly a month before his second child is due.

He collapsed at home on Friday night after he returned from a gig with his band Nexis.

Mr Guppy, 42, also known as Mega and Mazzer, was a popular face in the town where he grew up and was involved with many local bands. He worked at Fascia Graphics for 14 years.

His long-term partner, Alison Pibworth, is eight months pregnant. They already have a four-year-old daughter, Kimberley.

Friend and colleague Andy Morse said: “Mark was more than a work colleague he was a close friend for more than 20 years. Both in and out of work he was the most helpful, selfless and amicable person you could meet.

“His razor-sharp wit was so infectious and his personality brightened any room.”

Fascia Graphics managing director Paul Bennett said: “Nothing was ever too much trouble for Maz he would always help and listen be it work or with a personal problem. The most genuine man I have ever met, known or worked with.”

More than 200 friends have left online tributes.

Chris Cowdry said: “My best friend, and someone who I considered a brother, died suddenly. You were the sweetest friend, partner and father to your lovely daughter Kimberley.

“Words really cannot explain how much you will be missed.”

Andy Donne, singer in Mr Guppy’s former band, said: “This is a shock and terrible tragedy.

“Mark was one of the most solid, dependable and down- to-earth people I have ever known – as well as being the best drummer I ever worked with. A huge heart and a great sense of humour made Mark one of a kind.”

Another friend Donna Jones said: “On August 22 we lost a beautiful guy and a true friend.

“It was a privilege to know him. One of the last things Mark said to me the night he passed on was: ‘it’s life, it’s rock n roll, just get on with it’. This was Mark’s response to me moaning about playing a bum note that night.”

Funeral details have yet to be announced. An inquest has been opened.
