It will be full steam ahead all weekend for the ancient engines in the Crofton Pumping Station, where for the first time, there will be a vegetable and flower show.

The competition is open to people living or working in a 15-mile radius. There will be 19 classes on saturday with the produce displayed on Sunday and bank holiday Monday, from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

On Sunday a Dakota from the battle of Britain Flight is due to fly over the pumping station at about 3.40pm.

Next day author Warren Berry will be in the pumping station to sign copies of his new book, The Kennet and Avon Navigation – A History.

The Rotary Club’s popular annual August bank holiday charity car boot sale takes place on Monday at the football club in Elcot Lane, from 8.30am to 1pm.

The gates open from 6.30am for those running stalls and the cost will be £5 for cars and £9 for vans and can be booked in advance through (01672) 516338.

The public can arrive from 8.30am and admission will be by donation to Rotary charities.
