People in Wiltshire recycled more than a million Tetra Pak drink cartons in the first year of a new scheme.
Wiltshire Council introduced bins at the county’s ten household recycling centres last July. The cartons used to be sent to landfill.
More than 23 tonnes have been recycled – about 1.1million cartons. Devizes led the way with 3.76 tonnes of cartons, which are made into products such as paper bags, envelopes and plasterboard liner.
Councillor Toby Sturgis, Wiltshire cabinet member for waste and the environment, said: “I am delighted to see that offering to take Tetra Pak cartons has proved very popular and diverted a significant amount of waste that would otherwise be buried in the ground.”
Tetra Pak has launched a video competition to search for the most original way to squash their empty cartons.
The winner can choose between a place on an international environmental adventure or an Eco TV, 50 DVDs and a supply of wine or smoothies.
