St James' Church in Devizes is seeking permission to repair the partially collapsed Crammer wall.
It was damaged 18 months ago following torrential rain and high winds.
Churchwarden Noel Woolrych said permission would be needed from Wiltshire Council and the Diocese of Salisbury.
The church’s preferred option is to rebuild the wall but reduce its height sloping down to the road.
Mr Woolrych said once planning permission had been approved the church would get an engineer to examine the wall to determine the exact cost of the repairs, currently estimated at between £60,000 and £100,000.
