Rubber ducks will bring a splash of colour to Cherhill as villagers compete in the bi-annual duck race next week.

Most of the village is expected to turn out to the race on Sunday, August 30, to raise money for the village hall.

Parish councillor David Evans said: “The duck race is really lovely – it is like the one in Calne, but not as grand.

“Each year proceeds go to a different cause and this year the village hall was chosen.”

The money will go to the toilets and flooring at the hall where the kitchen has just been improved.

A raft race, in which competitors use rafts they have made themselves, will also take place.

There will also be stalls and a barbecue in Mill Lane.

“It should be a lovely day,” Mr Evans said. “We are just hoping the weather is nice. By raising money for the village hall in this way we can reduce costs for people renting it.”

Entry to the races is £2, which includes a free duck, and the gates open at 2pm with the race starting at 3pm.

The previous day, Saturday August 29, the annual flower show will be held in the village hall from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Mr Evans said: “We always have a good turn out, and this year we have nearly 100 classes.” Schedules, entry forms and rules are available from David Evans on (01249) 815170.
