Youngsters in Calne have been getting a taste of life in the fast lane as they took part in extreme sports sessions.

The nine to 12-year-olds spent Tuesday of last week learning kite-boarding and archery at the flagship Beversbrook Sports Facility .

The day was part of the Splash – Calne Goes Extreme workshop and a similar session will be held at Beversbrook from 11am to 3.30pm tomorrow.

Football development officer and organiser Kevin Whitehorn said: “Our first session was fantastic – the youngsters had a go at flying kites and kite-boarding.

“The only problem was that there was no wind.

“Nevertheless everyone really enjoyed it and the next sessions are fully booked.”

The 15 youngsters learned how to get the kites off the ground without any wind and then learnt how to pull each other along on the kite board.

They wee introduced to archery in the second half of the day, which was organised by Calne Town Council in partnership with the police charity Splash.

Mr Whitehorn said: “The day went so well that we are now looking at setting up an archery club at Beversbrook.

“We have got nearly everything in place now, we are just looking at dates.

“I am a qualified archery coach so I will be running the classes.”

Mr Whitehorn has also run a soccer camp for youngsters at Beversbrook, which was opened earlier this year.

“The camp went really well too,” he said.

“We had 54 people come and everyone went home happily with their t-shirts on.

“We are trying to use the new centre to the best we can, to give young people the chance to try as many different things as possible.”
