A campaign to recruit 100 people to write to Gordon Brown has been launched by Marlborough Climate Pledge Group.

It wants the Prime Minister to receive a letter a day for 100 days from a Marlborough resident, to highlight the Copenhagen climate change summit in December.

The numbers of pledges received will be recorded weekly on a Pledgeometer, set up at the Bulge in the High Street.

Group member Judy Hindley said: “We’ll be writing about things that concern us – the strange, extreme weather, the crazy seasons, the changes to our beloved countryside, but also, the traffic-choked streets and polluted atmosphere that stifle our community spirit and our children’s freedom.”

Mrs Hindley, of Patten Alley, near St Mary’s Church, said the situation really hit her after her first grandchild was born two months ago.

She said: “I came to this area 24 years ago and the changes have made me very sad. I watch the seasons come and go but they have changed.

“When I came here I thought, this was the perfect place to raise children. But parents don’t let their children walk to school any more because of the traffic.

“The traffic is unnecessary. The Government could do so much more about public transport.”

The group is also screening the climate change film The Age of Stupid, narrated by Pete Postlethwaite, at the town hall on October 7.
