Drivers in Marlborough have continued to suffer this week thanks to a double dose of road works. Traffic heading into town from every direction has met with queues along the A346 Swindon Road to Ogbourne Downs Golf Club and beyond. One driver took more than one and a half hours to go to Chiseldon and back for petrol on Sunday and yesterday taxi owner Anne Harley said delays are costing passengers £7.50 instead of the usual £4. “What idiot decided we should have two lots of road works at once?” asked Mrs Harley. “It is affecting all the businesses in the town as well as the taxi companies Gas work in Barn Street, part of the main Swindon-Salisbury route, have combined with work on the zebra crossing by St Peter’s Junior School to create chaos and on Sunday long queues stretched back over The Common almost to Rockley. On Monday council contractors made the situationworse by setting up traffic lights further along London Road to repair drain covers between Elcot Lane and Barnfield. West and Wales Utilities is installing a gas main in Barn Street and have set up a temporary one-way system with south-bound traffic using Barn Street and north-bound traffic using Kingsbury Street. A Wiltshire Council spokesman said the double whammy was unavoidable because both work on the gas main and pedestrian crossing was scheduled into contractors’ programmes.
