A FRENCH driver was arrested on suspicion of careless driving following a head-on crash on the A345 between Marlborough and Pewsey on Friday afternoon.

The incident took place shortly before 4pm on Friday when a Toyota MR2 sports car was in collision with a Renault Clio at Clench Common. It is thought that the driver of the Clio, a Frenchman, had experienced a lapse in concentration and was driving on the wrong side of the road.

A woman passenger in the Toyota was airlifted to Great Western Hospital but her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. A male passenger in the Clio was taken by road ambulance to the GWH suffering with back pain.

The driver of the Clio was arrested and taken to Gable Cross police station in Swindon on suspicion of careless driving. He was later released on police bail.

The road was closed for five hours while police accident investigators carried out an examination of the scene. Traffic was diverted through Oare and Wootton Rivers.

Acting inspector Andy Peach said: “We would like to thank drivers for their patience and good humour during this period.”
