Disabled youngsters in Chippenham will soon have somewhere to play after-school following the imminent launch of the towns first and only specialised club.

Volunteers at the town’s Salvation Army will help man the weekly Little Monkey’s club which is specifically designed for children suffering from mild special needs such as Downs Syndrome and Aspergers.

The group already run the Monkey Business club for disabled youths from 11 to 18 years old but they realised there was nothing available for younger children.

Chippenham Salvation Army centre manager Matthew Smith is spearheading the campaign.

He said: “There really is nothing for youngsters who have low end special needs in the area as it tends to be children with high end needs that have the groups and clubs available to them.

“We have enjoyed great success with the Monkey Business club and wanted something for the younger children to come along and take part in.

“It is great for them not only to have activities outside of school but to interact with other children with similar conditions.”

The club, which will charge a nominal fee for members, will meet every Monday from 6pm until 7.15pm during term time at the Salvation Hall in Foghamshire.

Activities at the club will include arts and crafts, game playing, computer games, table tennis and music.

In order for the club to get off the ground another four volunteers are needed to help the current four volunteers who have signed up.

Mr Smith said: “We really need some helpers to get this idea up and running and I think it is vital for the town to get this club going.

“I would really like to hear from anyone who might be able to help us out.”
