Pub landlord Lee Newman has been banned from every licensed premises in Malmesbury except his own after being involved in a fight with his brother.

Mr Newman, landlord of the Borough Arms in Oxford Street, was banned for three months by the town’s Pubwatch group after he was involved in a fight in the Three Cups on June 1.

Landlords unanimously voted to bar him at a meeting on June 4, which Mr Newman did not attend.

Pubwatch chairman Carol Hudson, who is landlady of the Rose and Crown, said landlords needed to lead by example.

She said: “Any kind of fighting will not be tolerated in the town and people who get involved in it need to be disciplined. It was decided the behaviour was unacceptable on someone else’s property. Fighting, or hitting a member of staff or damage to property needs to carry an instant ban.

“No messing about, pubs are not going to stand for that sort of thing. It doesn’t matter who you are, we don’t show any favouritism. Landlords need to be the ones showing an example.”

She said the Three Cups is a well-run pub and said the fight could have broken out anywhere.

“Most of the pubs in the town are well run and quiet” said Mrs Hudson. “But there has been a bit of trouble in a few places and we need to work together to stop it.”

Mr Newman was one of five people banned at the meeting.

Mr Newman, who has been in charge at the Borough Arms for about two years and formerly worked as a barman at the King’s Arms, admitted he had an argument with his brother. He said: “As far as I’m concerned there was a family argument and that’s it.”

Police Sergeant Martin Alvis said: “We have a very good Pubwatch group in Malmesbury.

“It works closely with us to deal with problems and anti-social behaviour and public disorder is not going to be tolerated.”
