charity worker Carie Evans is undertaking a marathon swim but is doing it in bite-size pieces.

Mrs Evans, 54, of Windsor Drive, Devizes, is a caseworker for the Devizes and Melksham area of the Wiltshire Blind Association and is hoping to raise more than £1,000 for the charity by swimming a distance equivalent to the English Channel.

On weekday mornings she is swimming 32 lengths, or half a mile, at Devizes Leisure Centre.

She has been working on the 22-mile distance since April 20 and is within three-and-a-half miles of her goal.

She said: “I am not a particularly keen swimmer and I only do the breast stroke so it is taking me some time. I do not have the stamina to do all 22 miles at once.”

She hopes the swim will not just raise money but will raise awareness of the Wiltshire Blind Association, which gets no Goverment funding.

Anyone who would like to sponsor Mrs Evans should ring the Wiltshire Blind Association on (01380) 723682.
