Tears were shed at West Wiltshire Crematorium today at the funeral of Devizes teenager Jonny Stock.

The crematorium chapel was full for the service, led by the Rev Chris Tebbutt, vicar of St James in Devizes.

Jonny, 16, of Kingsley Road, Devizes, was known to be footloose and fancy free so when he went missing at the beginning of March there was no immediate fears for his safety.

So his family and friends were shocked when his body was discovered behind his grandparents’ garden in Roundway village on May 21.

Mr Tebbutt told the congregation: “There is nothing worse than the death of a young person and as father of a 16-year-old I can tell you I feel your pain.”

Jonny’s parents, John and Sharon, were supported by Jonny’s three sisters, Leanne, Kerry Anne and Kirsty and younger brother Luke. Jonny’s grandparents Charles and Margaret were also there.

Mr Tebbutt said he had known Jonny as a pupil at Southbroom Junior School. Jonny had also attended Southbroom Infants and had gone onto Devizes School afterwards.

Many of his classmates and headmaster Malcolm Irons were in the congregation.

Mr Tebbutt said: “His family describes him as a free spirit, so his disappearance at first did not cause great concern. His death affects us all and the question that strikes us all is why.”

Mr Tebbutt also described Jonny’s love of all bikes and his love of tinkering with machinery. He said he was a warm, well-liked individual with a large circle of friends, many of whom were in the congregation.

Jonny’s coffin was carried in to the appropriate strains of Ouch by N=Dubz and other of Jonny’s favourite tunes, Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N’Roses and Read ‘Em and Weep by Meatloaf were played.

There was a retiring collection in aid of Diabetes UK and the mourners were invited to a reception at the Wyvern Club in Devizes.
