Rocker Pete Doherty led police on a late-night car chase when he drunkenly fled from cops after a gig, a court heard today.

The former Babyshambles frontman, who lives in a rented house at Dursley in Savernake Forest near Marlborough, was ordered to pull over after he was spotted driving erratically following a concert at the Guildhall in Gloucester.

But Doherty, 30, failed to stop and sped away. He drove his Mercedes through a red light and narrowly missed a group of revellers when he mounted a kerb.

When the ex-Libertine finally pulled over, officers saw him trying to swap seats with a female passenger.

A breath test revealed he had 50 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35.

Police also seized 0.6 grams of heroin - with a street value of £35 - and a homemade crack pipe from his car.

Police later searched his home and found three grams of heroin with a street value of £300.

Appearing at Stroud Magistrates Court today, Doherty - wearing a white vest and dark cardigan - denied a charge of dangerous driving.

But the singer pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of class A drugs, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

He did not enter a plea to one count of driving while under the influence of alcohol Peter Ratcliffe, defending, said: ''My client would firstly like to express his disappointment in himself and disappointed that he has let his fans down.

''He has been out of trouble for over a year and a break of 14 months represents a real achievement for someone with a drug dependency.

''This offence represents an aberration. There a been a very real and very significant change in his behaviour.''

The court heard how Doherty was arrested shortly after leaving a concert at Gloucester's Guildhall in the early hours of Thursday morning..

The singer had performed a gig in the city with his band The Babyshambles before leaving the venue with a mystery woman at 12.30am.

Cops became concerned when they spotted the ex-Libertines' frontman driving erratically over a junction and ordered him to pull over.

But Doherty, who has a colourful history of drug and alcohol related offences, sped away - finally pulling over more than a half-a-mile away.

He was arrested and remanded in custody over night before being hauled before magistrates yesterday morning charged with six offences.

More than 50 young fans crowded the streets outside the court in the hope of catching a glimpse of the famed rock star.

Chris Weaver, chairman of the bench, said: ''You say about letting his fans down but continuing with a drug addiction to this highly illegal substance would be the biggest way of setting them down.

''We have some concern that hew will continue with his addition.''

Doherty ''whooped'' with delight when he was granted bail on the grounds his manager Andrew Boyd would provide a #50,000 bond to the court.

He was ordered to obey a 12-hour curfew while not performing and warned not to take any illegal drugs The case was adjourned to Cheltenham Magistrates Court on August 11 for a committal hearing.
