Malmesbury resident Arthur Robb fears boy racers in the town could have a negative impact on local tourism.

Mr Robb has become so frustrated with the noise he’s started making a record of the disruption.

Station Yard car park in Malmesbury is known as a popular haunt of the Malmesbury Cruisers who meet up in their expensively modified cars.

Mr Robb, who has been recording the noisy get-togethers since January, has now started circulating the information to residents, the police and local newspapers.

He now fears the revving engines, squealing tyres, honking horns, loud stereos and shouting has got so bad it could affect the town’s ability to bring in tourists.

He said: “I really think this could damage the local tourism industry.

“It is going on every lunchtime and evening Monday to Friday, nearly all day on Saturday and Sundays and on Bank Holidays they start at 10am.

“They sit in their cars and take it in turns to rev their engines.

“This weekend I saw that visitors to the Abbey and the Abbey Gardens got a big dose of them as they were trying to come and go.”

And Mr Robb is concerned to see their impact is spreading.

He said: “It’s not just people who live around Station Yard.

“Resident who live in the lower High Street are also complaining as they drive up and down there.

“In the summer people are sitting outside more often in their gardens and have their doors open so they are going to hear the noise even more.”

Mr Robb isn’t convinced that the move to the new Wiltshire Council will being an end to the disruption.

He said: “Hopefully the new council will be able to get something resolved.

“But I fear that Malmesbury will just become a small part of a big county.”

Police Sergeant Martin Alvis said that although the vehicles are legal police do have the power to impound cars being used to cause anti social behaviour.

He said: “We can give out Section 59 warnings. If we have to give out a second one the car can be seized and the owner has to pay £120 to get it back.

“Ultimately there is need for compromise on both sides.”
