HUNDREDS of cyclists are expected to descend on Castle Combe Circuit next week to support students in Africa.

Chippenham and District Wheelers are running the Midsummer Bike Night on June 16 to support Bath based charity Jole Rider, which operates the Bikes4Africa programme.

Club spokesperson Paul Freegard said: “We are attempting to cycle 5,000 miles as a collective total in just three hours, as a team that includes our cycling club members and also members of the public of all ages and abilities who wish to join in. It also provides a unique opportunity to cycle around the famous race track.”

The club is urging local people to bring along any unwanted teenage or adult, mountain or hybrid bikes to donate to Bikes4Africa.

They will then be made roadworthy, shipped to African secondary schools, and allocated by teachers to students with the longest walks to school.

Mr Freegard added: “When a student finishes his or her education, their bike remains at the school, to be used by another student.

“For African students, who often face a walk in searing heat of ten miles or even further to get to school, a bike makes an enormous difference not only to them, but to their communities and countries.”

Chairman Andy Cook is excited to be running the event again this year and is hoping for a big attendance.

He said: “Last year, over 400 participants of all ages rode over 4,000 miles. This year we hope to go even further. I would encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the evening supporting Bikes4Africa whilst getting active on their bikes.”

Other activities will also take place on the night, including a British Cycling ‘Go Ride’ skills circuit, DC Leisure ‘Spinning Bikes as well as various trade stands.

There will also be opportunities for the blind or partially sighted to share a tandem ride around the track.

The event kicks off at 6pm and for more information visit the Wheelers' web site via the link on the right or www.jole1000.org.uk.
