A key route through a Wiltshire town has reopened after flooding left it closed for days.

The Bradford on Avon Town Bridge reopened on the morning of Wednesday, November 27, days after it had been closed due to flooding sparked by Storm Bert.

Heavy rainfall led to the River Avon bursting its banks on Monday, November 25, and left large parts of the town centre underwater and impassable.

Councillor Jack Vittles, the town’s mayor, said the flooding was some of the worst the town had ever experienced.

At the time, he added: “The river is currently at record levels of over 3.5 metres which is even higher than the floods of December 2013. The area is severely flooded, so please avoid it.

“This is going to happen increasingly more, a lot of businesses and properties are still recovering from the floods we suffered in January.

“I'll be writing to Wiltshire Council and the Environment Agency urging them to increase our flood defences here in Bradford on Avon.”

(Image: Sheri O'Reilly) Multiple shops were hit by flood water during the week while cars were also spotted trying to navigate the difficult terrain.

The town’s Christmas Lights Switch-On, planned for November 29, was also cancelled because of the chaos.

The main road through the town was shut for some time, causing traffic delays in the surrounding areas.

It was reopened on Tuesday, November 26, as the clean-up operation began after water levels receded.

However, the Town Bridge remained shut until Wednesday morning after debris in the water piled up against it, including a fallen tree.

This was eventually reopened after being checked by engineers from Wiltshire Council.

A town council spokesperson added: “Wiltshire Council’s team has confirmed that the Town Bridge is now open again.

“Please drive carefully and check your routes before setting off though.”

Elsewhere around Wiltshire flooding caused more chaos with towns like Chippenham, Melksham, and Malmesbury worst hit.

Chippenham was hit by its worst flooding in decades, causing damage to multiple town centre businesses.

Dozens of roads around the county were closed or impassable, with multiple drivers becoming stuck in flood water.

Wiltshire Council warned motorists to take care during flooding.

A spokesperson added: “There continues to be numerous flooding issues in Wiltshire following the aftermath of Storm Bert and our teams are working hard throughout the county to provide support.

“Please take care on the roads and drive to the conditions. Remain vigilant of surface water and do not attempt to drive through any floodwater.”
