Nearly 2,000 people are estimated to be without electricity in Wiltshire as Storm Bert creates an increase in power cuts.

A combined total of 1,974 people are recorded by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to be experiencing an unplanned outage across Wiltshire, as the power company warns that strong winds and heavy rain mean it is “busier than usual”.

A yellow weather warning for rain is due to end at 11.45pm today and a yellow warning for wind ends at 9pm.

An SSEN statement on its website from 8.30am this morning warns: “We are busier than usual today as a result of Storm Bert bringing strong winds and heavy rain across our network.

“We have additional teams in operation to restore the power as quickly as possible, however, due to the high number of faults we're dealing with, combined with difficult travel restrictions, it may take longer than we'd usually expect to get your power back on.”
