Drivers could once again be hit by a “bottleneck” on two of Wiltshire’s busiest routes during a year-long road closure.

The northbound carriageway of the B4528 and the B4643, through Showell and Patterdown in Chippenham, will close to traffic on January 6 next year.

The road, used as an alternative route into the town to avoid the A350 and the A4, will be shut until December 19, 2025, between the A4 Bath Road and the A350 Lackham Roundabout.

During this time, Wiltshire Council will be carrying out “infrastructure works.”

During this time, motorists were hit by increased traffic on the A4 and the A350, particularly on the approach to Chequers Roundabout, with the closure creating a “bottleneck” that pushed more cars onto the A-roads.

The council has issued an order for the closure which said: “It is anticipated that the works will take the stated duration to complete depending upon weather conditions.

“Access will be maintained for residents and businesses where possible, although delays are likely due to the nature of the works. The order will have a maximum duration of 18 months.”
