Fire crews believe a “devastating” blaze that destroyed a town centre takeaway may have been started “accidentally.”

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed it believes a fire that gutted The Kebab and Pizza House on Northgate Street, Devizes, was started accidentally.

The service warned it may not be able to specify the cause of the incident due to the extent of the damage caused by the inferno.

Wiltshire Police added that the fire service is currently leading the investigation into the incident, which began during the early hours of Wednesday, November 12, and that officers will be assisting throughout.

Wiltshire Council has since been conducting safety works, which could take some time, after the building was deemed “structurally unsafe.”

A fire service spokesperson added: “We have now left the scene, after a reinspection and dealing with some hot spots this morning.

“The road closure now sits with Wiltshire Council due to the instability of the building.

“We believe the fire started accidentally but we may not be able to specify a cause, given the damage.”
