Several speeders have been caught out by police officers lying in wait as part of a major crackdown.

On Monday, November 4, officers from the Devizes Response Team joined the Wiltshire Police Speed Watch Enforcement Team to stake out local roads raised as areas of concern for speeding.

The A342 at Bromham saw the highest number of speeding drivers, with 14 motorists reported for driving over the 30mph speed limit.

The highest speed clocked on this road was 40mph.

Four drivers were also caught speeding on Bath Road, at the top of Caen Hill in Devizes, with one going 39mph in the 30mph zone.

However, officers have made it clear that this is not the last of speed checks in the area, as Wiltshire Police continues to crackdown on what it calls the "fatal five" offences.

These include speeding, driving without a seatbelt, driving whilst using a mobile phone, drink/drug driving and dangerous or careless driving.

The crackdown comes after the number of people killed or seriously injured as a result of collisions in Wiltshire rose from 157 in 2020 to 255 in 2023.

"Committing these offences greatly increases your risk of causing a serious collision," said Inspector Jonathan Fairbairn, of the Roads Policing Unit.

"Our teams are committed to targeting drivers who commit these offences."
