Police caught scores of speeding motorists in a week of crackdowns on drivers in Devizes.

Officers from Wiltshire Police have been out and about in several parts of Devizes, Avebury and Market Lavington, targeting some of the roads residents had raised concerns about.

Within less than an hour on Tuesday, October 29, 16 drivers were issued with notices of intended prosecution for speeding after officers stood watch at Avebury Sports and Social Club.

The drivers, some of whom were caught doing over 60mph on a 30mph road, were all given various sentences depending on their previous convictions.

Between 8.15am and 9am, four of the drivers caught were fined £100 and given three points on their driving license.

11 of the drivers caught were offered a speed awareness course, and one was summoned to court.

The speeding crackdown in Avebury comes just one day after police officers also laid in wait on Spin Hill in Market Lavington and caught one driver doing 37mph on the 30mph road.

The driver was issued a notice of intended prosecution for speeding.

“Even one speeder is too many. There’s a reason it is one of the fatal five offences – the offences which are most likely to lead to a serious injury or fatal collision," said Jenn Holton, Wiltshire Police harm reduction lead

“We are determined to clamp down on speeding and make our roads as safe as possible for everyone.”
