A Wiltshire author has released a new book focused on the history of the Congo during the Cold War.

The novel, Barricade, by David Longridge, revolves around the Democratic Republic of Congo and its pivotal role in Cold War politics, shortly after gaining independence in 1960.

The country became a focal point for Russia and the USA as they vied for control over its vast mineral resources.

The book's story follows Alain Banza, a witness to a decisive event in Katanga province, and his interactions with Parisian investigative journalist Kim de Rochefort.

Together, they strive to highlight those who seek to exploit the mineral wealth of the newly independent Congo.

Mr Longridge said: "Barricade opens up to the reader a crucial but little-known period in Congo’s short history.

"Granted its independence in 1960, it suddenly became the focus of Cold War politics as Russia and the USA competed to gain influence over its vast mineral resources.

"Little has been written about the history of Congo at that turbulent time, and almost nothing in fiction has been published.

"Barricade is the exception.

"I hope this book enlightens readers to an extent and they seek more information after."
