A postgraduate student from Calne said she is "very grateful" after being one of four people in the UK to receive a bursary.

Eleanor Cameron was awarded the Centenary Award bursary from the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust to aid her MSc in food security at the University of Warwick.

Her course explores factors impacting food security, including precision agriculture, agroecology, and sustainable farming practices that optimise resource use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Ms Cameron is pursuing her master's to contribute to solutions improving agricultural practices, mitigating risks, and promoting equitable access to nutritious food.

She said: "During my undergraduate studies, I recognised the pressing need to address global food insecurity.

"For my dissertation, I explored the under-represented views of British farmers amidst the global push for sustainability.

"Inspired by conversations with my farming family, who voiced concerns over the lack of farmer representation in legislation and the environmental impacts of modern farming practices, I am determined to make a meaningful impact."

Ms Cameron added: "I believe that this master’s programme, with its rigorous academic training and diverse learning opportunities, will equip me to pursue my vision.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity to enhance my knowledge and advance my career position with the support of this prestigious award."

The Centenary Award was introduced by rural insurer NFU Mutual in 2010 to mark its 100th anniversary.

The aim of the award is to support future agricultural leaders and promote research and innovation within the industry.

It offers annual bursaries covering up to 75 per cent of course fees for selected postgraduate agricultural students.

Ms Cameron was one of only four students across the UK to receive the award in 2024.

The judging panel looked for applicants who were not only excellent academic performers, but also had a passion for UK agriculture and showed potential to be future industry leaders.

Jim McLaren, NFU Mutual chairman, said: "We’re very pleased that our award is continuing to attract high quality applicants who are studying at a broad range of universities across the UK.

“Our bursary scheme supports NFU Mutual’s responsible business ambition to protect rural lives and livelihoods, by championing research and innovation for the UK agricultural industry, whilst also supporting passionate individuals to advance their careers.

"We are delighted to be supporting Eleanor’s postgraduate course with our Centenary Award bursary and wish her all the very best for her studies."
