National Trust sites have been voted the best places to stop off during a road trip.

With 20 million people taking to the roads next week for the half term holidays, Welcome Break, the motorway service station operator, has commissioned research into the most popular destinations for stop off breaks.

National Trust sites were found to be the most popular roadside stop off points at 21 per cent, followed by Stonehenge and Loch Ness both at 17 per cent.

Also gaining a place in the top ten were The Eden Project, Isle of Skye, Cheddar Gorge, Warwick Castle, Ben Nevis, The White Cliffs of Dover and Angel of the North.

But with over 500 historic properties, gardens, nature reserves, houses and castles located across the UK, many of which are near motorways, National Trust, which has its headquarters in Swindon, topped the list.

Hannah Thomas Autumn Lead for National Programming & Production at the National Trust said: “With trees exploding with colour, harvest fairs and festivals, Halloween and half term, autumn really is one the best seasons for visiting the National Trust.

“Plus many of the places we care for are located near motorways, A roads and other main routes, so people often enjoy stopping off on long journeys, getting into nature and enjoying a spot of history and culture on route.”
