A “dearly loved” grandmother died at Great Western Hospital after an elective surgery.

Elizabeth Allen lived in Horton, near Devizes, and died on April 21, 2023, at Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

The 80-year-old was described as a “dearly loved wife” to her husband William and leaves behind three children and five grandchildren.

An inquest at Wiltshire and Swindon Coroner’s Court heard she visited hospital in January after struggling with a medical condition that “significantly affected her quality of life”.

While this condition was not life threatening, Dr Chris Thorn, the Consultant Surgeon who treated Elizabeth, told the court it had become “intolerable” for Elizabeth.

She voluntarily underwent surgery to treat the issue in January before undergoing two further procedures in April after the problem reoccurred.

Elizabeth remained in hospital after her last surgery and was monitored daily until April 19 when she suddenly deteriorated.

A CT scan revealed a “major problem” had developed since the procedure and she was taken into theatre.

Despite these efforts she died “peacefully” in hospital.

Dr Thorn did not believe Elizabeth’s deterioration was caused by an issue with her surgery as there would have been signs sooner, a view shared by the coroner.

A patient safety incident investigation found there was an “abrupt deterioration” with no clinical signs that could have been spotted earlier.
