Police caught a car going more than double the speed limit on the motorway in Wiltshire.

Roads Policing Unit officers caught up to a car travelling at 146mph at around 10.44pm on Thursday night.

A spokesperson said the motorist behind the wheel was "initially arrested for something else, but that was resolved".

For only having a provisional licence and driving at such a high speed, he has been ordered to attend court charged with excess speed and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

People must have a full driving licence before they can legally drive on any motorway in the UK, and must obey the speed limit of 70mph.

Since 2018, it has been legal for learner drivers to use motorways during their lessons if they are accompanied by a trained and approved driving instructor in a vehicle with dual controls and visible L plates.
